A new course created by the guys at fxphd covers Motion Control, Nuke & Deep Compositing. A free video preview of the first class reveals some great behind the scenes footage as well as explaining some methods and techniques used to make the slow motion video.
Both the Bolt and the Cyclops were used for the shoot and watching the preview you can see how they tackled it, as well as how motion control with the Bolt and Cyclops were instrumental in creating the final look of the video. Definitely worth a watch!

The MrMoco team found themselves for a second time shooting at Espanyol Stadium in Barcelona – this time for Sky's latest Premier League advertising campaign. Produced by Outsider and directed by Scott Lyon, the commercial features Thierry Henry going back in time to prove that the Premier League really is the best league in the world!
An extremely technical shoot that involved precisely timed moves, parts of the original footage was tracked and given to the Moco technical crew as Maya camera moves, so it could then be imported into the Milo motion control rig. The Milo would then carry out these extremely accurate shots of Thierry Henry in situ, which could then be mixed with the original footage.
Thierry had to be filmed under the exact same conditions and lighting, (including the right time of day for correct shadows) to match up the new footage with the old. To really capture the authentic look, props included identical advertisement hoarding, match footballs and even a purpose built set of the tunnel where Roy Keane famously argued with Patrick Vieira. The result was a fantastic, time-travelling trip down memory lane, culminating in the final denouement “that is why my friends, this is the best league in the world”.
The MrMoco team took the Bolt rig to Madrid earlier in the year for Honda's latest Civic Commercial. Produced by RSA films and directed by Johnny Hardstaff the commercial showed Honda’s attention to detail to create that perfect feeling when driving. Shooting a mixture of frame rates on a Phantom flex it appears as though the car is suspended in its surroundings allowing Honda's engineers to manipulate the environment to create the maximum feeling of joy.
The commercial was shot over various locations around Madrid – including a 15ft high platform in a forest and also on a motorway flyover. The MrMoco team often film in sunny Spain – at the beginning of June the crew travelled to Barcelona with a Milo to shoot in Espanyol's Stadium, and only a few weeks back, were shooting again in Barcelona with the Bolt running on 30 metres of track laid in a field! More on that shoot coming soon.
Watch this fascinating behind the scenes video for a Honda commercial. It was a challenging advert to create, requiring some clever ingenuity. Our Titan arm provided a great solution to help create the visually captivating video!
At NAB we showed countless demonstrations and met many fantastic people. For us the show is a great opportunity to make new friends, meet old acquaintances and of course showcase all the latest developments we’ve been working on here at Mark Roberts.
In case you missed us there, or perhaps just didn’t get a chance to get out to the event, we’ve put together a final overview of what went down. To get a glimpse of the technology behind our newest camera tracking technology check out the photos below and watch the short video above with our Managing Director Assaff Rawner. The video was generously created by IABM (International Association of Broadcasting Manufacturers).
On the 20th of June Mr Moco Rentals in collaboration with Love High Speed and Park Royal studios released the Bolt high speed cinebot in the UK. For those of you who couldn’t make it here is a taste of what you missed.

The longest and only telescopic moco arm in the world designed and created by Mark Roberts Motion Control was unveiled in 2012. The Titan is the first precision telescopic motion control arm. Fitted to a Milo or Cyclops the reach and maximum height is more than any other motion control rig available anywhere. We have had it out and about around London, shooting at a pool side at a lido, in the field at an allotment and in and out of a few studios too. For the latest Channel 4seven ident we set the rig up on a 1.5m high platform on 36m of track. Below is a time-lapse of the shoot and also the completed ident. Because of the precise nature of the move required to enable the fold effect, the camera moves were prevized in Maya, then imported to the rig. The behind the scenes moving time-lapse shots were taken using our DSLR moco head, the SFH-30.
The Titan was also used on this Virgin Media commercial where we shot multi passes of David Tennant fighting himself. The extend of the Titan, with its close to 7m of travel was the only axis used in this pull back. Using the Titan meant we did not need to lay track in frame that would have to be taken out in post later or have the track interfere with the actors movement.

Mark Roberts Motion Control have supplied industrial robots running from user and film-industry-friendly software for High Speed shooting for many years. These have become very popular recently, and we have had many enquiries about the High Speed Rigs that we supply, typically they are very heavy industrial robots that may be lacking some of the accuracy usually associated with Motion Control techniques and MRMC Rigs, but more than make up for it in speed. These robots can be used for different applications but they are excellent for high speed table top shoots with cameras like Phantoms or as model movers.
Some of the advantges that MRMC can offer when controlling such high speed units include:
- Flair software specifically designed for getting the exact move required in as little time as possible, so time can be spent on lighting and aesthetics rather than programming.
- Also drive additional model movers or lens motors.
- Flair has a complete mathematical model of the rig and can automatically adjust focus at high speed, to keep the target sharp.
- Interfaces to relays and DMX lighting controls for controlling external devices, and it can trigger the camera at any point in the move.
- Complete safe operation and safety of the robot built into the software.
- Flair will calculate maximum allowed speeds for any move, even without the robot attached.
- Flair is industry standard software that can be used for high-speed, live-action or animation.
As well as these high speed Robots, MRMC has also had a high speed linear motor available for many years combining high speed shooting with motion control.
These videos show examples of some of these applications.
