A New Solution For Live Filming
At the BLACK IRIS WEEKLY LIVE concert on September 2nd, 2024, the SR-1 Small Robotic Head paired with the Nikon Z 9 offered a new take on live filming.
The SR-1 Small Robotic Head is a pan-tilt head for professional photography and videography designed to be used in locations difficult for camera operators to access. This remote production tool enhances the creativity of shots, helps capture new angles and easily achieves shots that would be ‘impossible’ by hand.
Recently, cinematographer DP Nobuhiro Kuroishi and video director emi used the SR-1 to shoot the BLACK IRIS WEEKLY LIVE Concert and discussed how it changed the game for filming live events.
How The SR-1 and Nikon Z 9 Helped Overcome Obstacles
One of the biggest obstacles when filming live events is having a videographer for each camera- it results in several people constantly moving around, which can distract the audience’s focus from the artist’s performance. Music video shoots also require artists’ concentration as they can be sensitive to their environment.
The combination of the SR-1 Small Robotic Head and Nikon Z 9 for this concert helped overcome these problems. The SR-1’s compact size and quiet operation were perfect for the smaller venue, where larger camera setups tended to get in the audience’s way. The SR-1 and the Z 9 blended seamlessly into the stage without drawing attention away from the artists. It also didn’t get in the way of the artist’s performance.
The robot helped capture smooth shots from various angles, including moving shots on a slider in front of the stage and unique behind-the-artist shots at the back of the stage. Its discreet design blended perfectly at the back of the stage, making it seem like just another stage light. The SR-1’s smooth transitions between fast and slow movements and pan, tilt, roll, and zoom functions offered incredible flexibility, resulting in a range of dynamic shots that enhanced the final footage.
“I’m also excited about exploring how we can use it with technologies like Polymotion to track the subject from different camera positions in the venue, like from a high angle and more, all without needing a dedicated camera operator.”
Creative Possibilities for Future Projects
DP Nobuhiro Kuroishi and video director emi also highlight how controlling the SR-1 remotely allowed capturing a wider variety of shots by flexibly adjusting the camera movements, making editing smoother and opening up more creative possibilities during post-production, inspiring new ideas for future creative projects.
