About the Clients

Canonical UK is a software company that operates in the tech and enterprise space. Their solutions power digital infrastructures, including cloud platforms, edge computing, and other advanced technologies. When browsing camera systems for their recently built space, the Canonical Briefing Centre in London, it was up to AV strategy and consultancy Octavius RE to make a strategic decision. By choosing MRMC Broadcast for their camera solutions, the client maintained a clean and minimal aesthetic to host virtual presentations, live broadcasts, and create content. This installation showcases a commitment to innovation and automation, creating a seamless in-house media production environment within the corporate space.

The Project & Objectives

This project involved implementing camera systems in a brand-new facility, the Canonical Briefing Centre, located at 3 More London. This space is designed to deliver engaging broadcast-quality presentations and create dynamic content for remote audiences. Canonical’s primary objective was to implement discreet camera systems that offered precise control, smooth motion and high reliability without disrupting the space’s minimal and clean aesthetic.

This space represents a new concept for Canonical, setting the template for other similar solutions to deploy globally. With no previous systems in place, Octavius RE was keen to deploy a solution that could evolve with the needs of the space. The camera systems needed to be intuitive enough for internal staff to operate yet robust and professional enough for external production teams to use seamlessly. This flexibility in users with varying experience was key to the evolving use of the space as staff became more familiar with the technology.

The Solution: MRMC Broadcast

To meet these project objectives, Octavius RE chose a suite of MRMC Broadcast products for Canonical’s innovative space. The space now houses two award-winning QRS Quiet Rail Systems, a modular track designed for studio, event, and mixed-production environments with the Sony ILME FR7 PTZ cameras. By hiding the rail systems in the ceiling, we were able to preserve the space’s clean, visual aesthetic.

To control camera movement on these rails, they also chose our ergonomically designed Broadcast Panel, which provides precise joystick and full-axis control of robotic systems, including PTZs. The client also purchased the MHC software and Polymotion Chat Studio for automated control of six heads, using the QSC Q-Sys platform on an iPad as the intuitive operating UI.

This combination of MRMC Broadcast solutions enabled Canonical to manage a variety of camera positions and angles, with the potential to incorporate tracking shots using Polymotion Chat Studio for future use. From office managers to external production teams, users have successfully utilised this MRMC Broadcast system in the space for several high-profile events to date. This setup demonstrates its invaluable capability to deliver dynamic, broadcast-quality output and content for remote audiences.

Our key criteria was highly granular control, smooth motion and reliability. We did look at various broadcast solutions for motion control but only MRMC had a diverse enough range for us to find a product that would work with our space.

Overall Experience– Why MRMC Broadcast

Octavius RE explored a wide range of broadcast motion control solutions for Canonical. What set MRMC Broadcast apart in their research was the flexibility and wide range of products that helped them find the system that met the unique spatial and functional requirements of the Canonical Briefing Centre.

“We were very impressed with the level of support we received during the consultation phase for working out the correct solution. The team at MRMC provided us with demos to define the bespoke elements. The MRMC on-site support for installation and programming was also very good and helped make the deployment very smooth,” said Emma Bigg, AV Design & Strategy at Octavius RE.
