As Jerry Andrews, Command Post/Toybox's motion control
operator put it, "Yes, we ARE crazy", in what has to be a
newly imaginative use of motion control. When director Brendan Norman
Ross recently shot the new Toyota Corolla S and LE car commercials, he
wanted to use a Milo motion control rig, but while on the back of
a moving flat-bed trailer truck. The six days of
shooting in New Zealand required a variety of special effects at
different locations such as the scenic Cooke Mountain and Akaroa
Harbour as shown in the photos below (where one can see the Milo
on the back of the truck). The director wanted to achieve a changing
background for the car, and while this is often done by filming the
car on bluescreen in a studio, the director did not want to shoot any
of it on bluescreen but all live with a real car on the road. In fact
several shots were also matched using the motion control rig to repeat
the exact movement of shots made using steady-cams and cranes.
Something that would be nearly impossible to do without motion
control. The purpose of the truck of course was so that the Milo could
be travelling beside the car and moving around it repeatedly. Then these
repeated takes could be mixed together with the car background making
smooth transitions from one location to another.
The Milo on the back of the truck can be seen below.
