Thomas Lange from TKL
recently completed a series of motion control shoots, in several
European locations, including Turkey, some of which made
strong use of interfacing to CGI. For a soon to be
released German feature film, "Bibi Blocksberg"
much pre-visualisation was done before shooting.
"Bibi" is a broom flying witch, and as the first step, prior
to shooting, the post-production company made a pre-visualisation for
each scene. Some backgrounds were shot from a crane or by
helicopter and then tracked in 3D. They built a 3D
dummy model of "Bibi" and animated this dummy to have the
best looking flying motion for each shot. From these they got the full
motion control moves required by the camera to achieve the shots with
the right viewing angles, scales, and movements, so that in the
finished shot it appears the girl is flying. For these flying
sequences approximately 60 different shots
were made, and all the data was transfered to the motion control rig
as XYZ data. TKL regularly use Softimage
to program in complex moves for the motion control rig, and recently
even used this feature while waiting off-set for the crew to finish
with another camera unit, so that once the motion control rig was
brought onto set, the move would already be set-up.
In Turkey, a more classical motion
control shot was required with the actor appearing in shot many times in
several different positions in a supermarket. This is very easily
achieved by simply repeating the same move again and again. All of TKL's
work is done using a Milo motion control rig which is
taken from location to location. Below are some shots from the recent
productions, showing the Milo on location.
